3D Home Theater Revolution

June 21st, 2010

home-theater-las-vegasBeing a gadget guy, I am cursed to step foot into every home electronics or stereo equipment store I wander by. This weekend was no different. As I took my car in for its quarterly oil change I stood outside and could hear the home electronics store across the parking lot calling my name. As I walked in I noticed in the center of the store 3 or 4 people standing in line. As I got closer I noticed they were all waiting to take their turn with the 3D viewers to watch “Avatar” on one of the stores home theater displays. Of course, I took my turn.

If you haven’t been to the movie theater recently and viewed “the new 3d” you are missing something. Since my kids are young, I make it to most of the 3D movies in Las Vegas and always walk away impressed. But, by no means did I expect home theater 3d systems to be anywhere near the magic I have recently been seeing at the movie theaters who clearly have a larger budget than I do to set up their theatre system.

Now I’m intrigued, armed with my recent tax refund I decide to see if I can find a home theater system in Las Vegas that will fit my budget. I guess I could go look on every telephone pole in town and find the number for the same guy who mows my lawn is also a “home theater installation expert”, but we’ve all heard the nightmares of dealing with these guys. I am one of those guys who likes to deal with reputable companies who are not all over the better business bureau complaints board – call me crazy.

I found a couple of home theater companies in Las Vegas with a quick Google search. I made a call to the first one on my list, YBET Inc of Las Vegas. The good news, they had 3d televisions. The bad news, they had many more home automation items that I’m not sure I can do without. Did I say I am one of those cursed gadget guys. I now have an appointment with one of their representatives to come over to my condo and help me layout a system that integrates my home computer system as well as my lighting and home security in with my 3D home theater system.

So I have joined the 3D home theatre revolution all due to my car needing an oil change.

Peace of Mind When Shopping for Home Automation

June 17th, 2010

crestronThere are many things to consider when shopping for home theater equipment and automation systems. We wanted to answer the question: “is peace of mind of a quality system worth the extra investment?” After a visit to the recent CES Conference in Las Vegas, Nevada we found that some of the quality systems and equipment were getting down in price to compete with some of the less expensive newcomers.

After reviewing many of the newcomer booths this year, we came to the Crestron home automation booth. As expected it was over the top, and yes, the automation was perfect. No fiddling around, and excuses from the sales representative that said, “we just haven’t set it up yet” or “that function will be added within 6 months”. The styling of the touch screens and environmental control systems we could rate somewhere between 8 and 9 on a scale of 10 (we have not given a 10 in 6 years of reviews).

After deciding on a clear winner at this year’s conference we headed back to our vacation rental and got to talking. If the equipment is being rated an 8 or 9 it could still have it’s rating raised or lowered depending on the quality and knowledge of the install team. So we went looking for a company in Las Vegas that had experience installing Crestron in Las Vegas home automation systems and theater equipment. After a quick Google search we found YBET Inc of Las Vegas.

We arranged a meeting at our vacation rental that was located in an upscale neighborhood in Las Vegas. We told the representative that we were interested in installing a Crestron Home Automation in Las Vegas into the house and had him give us his recommendations as to the proper upgrades and models that would be a best fit for this particular home. To our surprise the representative did not recommend his most expensive options nor did he recommend the entire package that we were supposedly willing to buy. It was a refreshing change to find a company that was not trying to take us for everything we had. It does seem that after this pleasant experience we had no choice but to add another half point to our 8-9 rating (remember we have never rated any home automation equipment at 10).

I guess that leaves our Las Vegas Crestron experience with an 8.5 – 9.5 rating. Looking forward to next year, this one’s going to be hard to top.

VoIP

May 4th, 2010

I Think there are many misconceptions about voip phone systems. The current trend is voip to the desktop. This is both more expensive and unnecessary. The only thing you save is cable. The phone system can be VoIP without going IP all the way to the desktop.
